It's time for Tennessee to codify the Equal Rights Amendment.
Tennessee can set a powerful example by enshrining the ERA in our constitution. Join us to take this historic step toward a more equal and just future for all of us!
Today, we’re launching a campaign to amend the Tennessee Constitution to include the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). This effort isn’t just about policy; it’s about justice, equality, and organizing for the future we want for Tennessee.
The fight for gender equality has deep roots in Tennessee’s history. In 1920, our state cast the decisive vote to ratify the 19th Amendment, securing women’s right to vote. In 1972, Tennessee initially ratified the federal ERA, only to rescind a few years later during a wave of backlash. Today, we’re reigniting this fight and taking it further by seeking to enshrine gender equality into our state’s foundational legal framework.
The urgency of this campaign is undeniable. On the heels of historic setbacks to women’s rights—from the overturning of Roe v. Wade to ongoing attacks on reproductive freedom—we must stand firm in the fight for gender equality. With a political climate that continues to undermine women’s autonomy and progress, now is the time to act decisively. By ratifying the ERA, we can ensure that Tennessee becomes a beacon of hope in an era where these values are constantly threatened.
Women in Tennessee still face persistent inequities: a gender pay gap that undermines economic opportunity, systemic barriers to leadership, and a lack of robust protections against discrimination. By ratifying the ERA at the state level, we can address these challenges head-on and ensure equal rights under the law for all Tennesseans—regardless of gender.
Join us on Thursday, January 9th, 2025 for our 2nd Annual Girl Power Event in Nashville to launch the ERA campaign. We will celebrate all the women who sacrificed so much in 2024 and bring our community together ahead of this historic initiative. Expect inspiring speakers, opportunities for engagement, and a chance to shape Tennessee’s future.
Tennessee gave us the right to vote, and we can carry that legacy to ensure this state is a better place for future generations.
Happy holidays and onward,
Aftyn
